Fusing I

Learn the fundamentals of kiln forming while creating your own exciting fused and slumped glass pieces. Topics covered include: design, safety, basic fusing concepts, glass compatibility, annealing, volume control, firing schedules, molds used to bend or slump glass, inclusions and other ways to design your glass piece and turn it into a 3-D object. . You will leave with 6 finished projects. No prior experience needed.

In this quick two hour class, learn the basics of cutting glass and layering dichroic glass to make a dazzling pendant and cabachon.

Fusing II

Dichroic Jewelry

Mica Magic

Learn about the metallic magic of micas. This class will teach you how to apply mica to glass, create a stencil using a photosensitive resist, and then sandblast away to achieve your design. No prior experience needed.

Drawing with Glass

Have fun exploring the possibilities of creating pictures using glass stringers and frit. We will use the vitrograph kiln to pull our "drawing lines". Come with a simple drawing to recreate in glass. No prior experience needed.

Vitrograph Kiln

Students will pull molten glass from a special kiln, forming threads of glass called stringers. These stringers can be used in future fused projects.

Wild Pattern Bars and Raking

Want something different to add to your fused glass project? On the first day create three different pattern bars and a kiln-raked project. Learn how to build and dam the bars in the kiln. On the second day, you will slice them using various saws to use in a final project. Basic fusing experience required.

Designing your own Art Glass

Work with glass powders, frits, stringers and various unconventional tools to create shading, texture, and other design elements. Build a palette of techniques that allows a wide range of painterly effects thru specific in-class exercises, and then apply it to a larger composition. The workshop is suitable for beginning thru advanced kilnworkers as well as artists from other media who want to translate their work into glass.

Learn techniques using a torch to create components for your fused projects.  
Landscape Art

2 Days
Design a glass panel using powders, frits, and glass "on edge". Create landscapes of other patterns on the first day, then make a larger panel using your landscape and strips of glass. Methods covered will include using the tile saw, wet belt sander, fiber paper to make dams, firing schedules and cutting of thin glass strips.

Textures in Kiln-Glass
(Liana Martin)


This intensive workshop will introduce beginning-to-intermediate-level artists to ways that textures can be created in kiln-glass projects. You will first make a model using various objects, then create a plaster-silica mold to cast glass into. Students will find that the methods taught can easily be adapted to fit many types of kiln-forming projects.  Wear clothing you don't mind getting messy.

Color Reactions

In this Demo Workshop we will explore Color Reactions – what they are, why they work, and how to use them to your best advantage. Topic also covers the use of the various Silver-laden Glasses from Double Helix, Tag and Precision, Silver Leaf and Foil, Enamels and Frits. We will specifically focus on what plays well together and what doesn’t – what not to do, or how to avoid making “Fugly” beads.

Great for beginners, intermediate or advanced level beadmakers – jumpstart your knowledge-base and lift the standard of your own work.

Fancy Techniques in Lampwork

This is a demonstration by Barb showing techniques that include: using a blow pipe to blow shards, inserting cubic zirconia, glass snipping, baking soda , and encasing silver wire and mesh. Barb is visiting from Australia for only a couple of months. Take the class while she's here.

The Beginning workshop includes a training manual, "Everything you Wanted Know about Mosaics but Were Afraid to Ask", base, materials,  adhesives, use of tools and grout.  Advanced Workshops  topics cover how to create with fiberglass mesh, rigid wrap, styrofoam, concrete and "Bloomin' Fanny Flowers"   including a variety of tiles, glass and 'found' objects.  All materials, instructions, and tools are provided.

Stained Glass Classes

Beginning Stained Glass

You will receive instruction in the art of stained glass in both copper foil and leaded techniques. Start with an introduction of glass types and work through cutting, grinding, foiling, lead and soldering. Supplies and tools required will be discussed at the first class session.

Make a beautiful kaleidoscope using the copper foil method. You will learn the construction and assembly along with ideas and this for some decorative soldering. Basic glass cutting skills required.

Cold Connections - Tubing, Capping and Riveting

With your own handmade beadcaps and rivets, you can add a whole new dimension to your jewelry designs. In this fun, fast-paced workshop you’ll create your own unique bead caps and learn to how to cap and core lampwork beads. Fold Forming

A completely new way of forming, folding and unfolding sheet metal quickly into wonderful 3-D shapes and textures, fold-forming was invented by Charles Lewton-Brain. In this 6 hour workshop, you'll make pendants, cuffs, leaves and earrings from copper sheet metal. Heat patinas will also be discussed and applied to some of your pieces. You'll be working with torches, so for safely, please wear hair up if needed and bring an apron to protect your clothes as this can be a messy workshop! Closed toe shoes are also recommended but not necessary.

Let's Get Wild

Take a walk on the wild side! Let your creative muse out of its cage! In this fun half-day workshop, you'll use a variety of metalworking techniques to transform shaped blanks cut from pure copper sheet metal into a fabulous safari themed bracelet. Techniques employed in making your masterpiece include copper etching, wireworking, metal forming and finishing with a deep rich patina.

ROMANCING THE BEAD!

Do you love big, beautiful glass focal beads and want to show them off? If so, this is just the class for you!!! In this workshop, learn how to weave, coil and wrap that wire to best show off those exquisite focal beads. Learn two different techniques for dressing up your large glass focals turning them into beautiful wearable art!. The one is a wrapped coil for beads with center holes and the other is for showcasing those cabochons, like dichroic glass.

THE ART OF THE PATINA

In this frequently requested workshop, you'll learn all about the patina and how to add an oxidized finish to silver, copper, brass and bronze. What turns the metal brown, black, blue, red or green? How can I give my jewelry a professional finish? In this fast-paced 2 hour class, you'll learn to add the patina finish you desire with simple step-by-step proven techniques.
Please feel free to bring along  a few jewelry pieces that you'd like to patina during the workshop.
Your workshop fee includes a written take-home patina "recipe" list with photos.

THE ART OF HAMMERING

How are those beautiful textures applied to jewelry pieces? Why am I getting marks on the metal I'm hammering? How do I get a smoother finish? What are all those different hammers for anyway? You'll learn the answers to these frequently asked questions and more in this fun and potentially noisy worksop!
Your workshop fee includes a written take-home hammer list with photos and recommended usages.

Learn the simple techniques to paint a rose on glass. Joanne covers different paint strokes and materials needed to personalize your glassware.

Open Studio

The open studio is designed for those with fusing experience. Bring your own glass cutting tools and have access to most of our studio equipment. We will be happy to provide brief guidance on your project or to suggest the appropriate firing schedule, however the Open Studio fee does not include instruction. Firing fees additional.

Cancellation Policy

All classes require pre-registration due to limited class sizes. Payment for class is due in full at the time of registration. Classes are for specified dates, no make-up classes provided. Refunds are available if notice of cancellation is provided at least two weeks before the first class and/or if registration is insufficient for the class. All withdrawals from workshops must be in writing, faxed or emailed. Please bring your own cutting tools and supplies to all classes. Tools may be purchased from Firebug Designs on or before the first class as well.
